Iolani Palace
Throughout my mission, I was puzzled that Hawaii residents don't celebrate the 4th of July, although you can find firework displays in Waikiki and Turtle Bay (for tourists). I had even seen bumper stickers that read "Hawaii isn't America!" I couldn't help but wonder about the reason for the bitter tones.
Part way through our mission we watched a film called "Princess Kaiulani" which told a tragic tale of the illegal takeover of Hawaii. We decided to go into Honolulu and take a tour of the Palace. Our guide was phenomenal! He was full of knowledge of the history of Hawaii (and a volunteer).
We enjoyed it so much, we would recommend it highly. We now have a deeper appreciation of the Polynesian people, and understanding of their bumper stickers and lack of excitement over the 4th of July.
